Joy H. Smith – 91, of Halifax passed away peacefully November 26, 2011 at her home. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of George and Mairi Morrison. Joy, a graduate of the University of King’s College, Halifax, was always a loyal supporter, returning in 1963 when her husband, Harry D. Smith, became President, and opening the doors of the President’s Lodge to students, faculty, alumni, family and friends. Joy was active in the King’s Alumni Association, being an inaugural inductee into the Association’s Order of the Ancient Commoner. Also a member of the former Alexandra Society and the Dalhousie-King’s Reading Club, Joy was a faithful, life-long worshiper at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, being active in the former Cathedral League and the current Saints Alive. Joy was a major contributor to the Cathedral’s earlier Needlework Project, being herself accomplished in textile handwork. Wherever Joy volunteered, she did so with energy, dedication, and skill. People everywhere were struck by her gracious spirit, loving kindness, and generous heart. Survived by her children Deryk (Shirley), Elora ON; Cynthia (Christos) Pilichos, Halifax; Roslyn (Bob Hauser), Comox, BC; and Jane (Lorway MacLellan), Halifax; grandchildren Davia deCroix (Adam), Long Beach, NY; Aneirin (Nova Tayona) and Courtney (Emily Bosomworth), Toronto; Alexis Pacey (Chris) and Andrea Pilichos (Steve Graham), Bedford; Emily Boudreau, Ottawa and James Boudreau, Halifax; great grandchildren Taryn and Devon Pacey; Nicolas, Andrew and Evianna Graham Pilichos; Loewan Smith Tayona; and twins, Henry and Oliver de Croix; sister-in-law, Dorothy Morrison and godchild, Norma Morrison Houston, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents and her husband; also, sister, Margaret (Hoff) Hoffman; and brother, Jim Morrison. Visitation will be held on Friday December 9th, 2-4 and 6-8 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax (902) 455-0531. Memorial Eucharist will be held Saturday, December 10th at 10:30am at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello St, Committal in the Columbarium; Reception to follow.
