He was born in Donkin Cape Breton on October 9, 1936 and graduated from Dalhousie University School of Medicine in 1960 where he was honored with membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. He did post graduate studies in Halifax and Boston Massachusetts before returning to practice internal medicine at the Halifax Infirmary in his specialty of gastroenterology.
J.J. practiced in Halifax before becoming Chief of the Department of Medicine at Dartmouth General Hospital where he established their Intensive Care Unit. He practiced in Dartmouth for 20 years, then at Gladstone Medical Center before retiring in 2014.
J.J. was happiest surrounded by his grandchildren at the family cottage in P.E.I.
John was predeceased by his parents Dr. John J. McKiggan and Maragaret “Mabs” (Howie); his sister Ida Mary Schwartz (William). He is survived by his loving wife Carol (MacLean) who was his best friend for 54 years; his children John Andrew (Elizabeth), Alexander (Katrina), Heather (Kenneth) and Michael (Terri); grandchildren Connor and Liam of Halifax, Andrew, Bryn and Kade of Dallas, Texas, and Logan, Keiran and Duncan of Dundee, Scotland.

Visitation will be held between 2-4pm and 7-9pm Thursday August 11 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive Halifax. Funeral service will be held at the Apostles Anglican Church 6670 Bayers Road Halifax on Friday August 12 at 11 am with Rev. Mark Marshall presiding. Burial will take place at a private service at the family cottage on his beloved P.E.I.
