John Barrington Ellis, 81 passed away peacefully February 3rd, 2023 at home surrounded by family. Born in Exeter, England he was the son of Peggy (Iley) Hammond and Greg Ellis. He is survived by his loving wife Judi (Furey), son Darryl (Lanie), daughters Karyn (Brendan) and Jennifer (Perry), grandsons Benedict and Ellis Rees, fur babies Lulu and Jake. His UK family, brothers David Ellis, Paul (Pat) Hammond, sisters Suzanne Ellis, Jane (David) O’Callaghan. Predeceased by his father, Greg Ellis, mother Peggy Hammond, and step-father Arthur Hammond.
John joined the British Navy at the age of 15, serving on the HMS Ganges, HMS Arc Royal, then finishing his career as a submariner. John met his wife Judi of 57 years while stationed in Halifax where they bonded over their love of the Beatles. John moved to Canada in the early 70’s, eventually starting his 43 year career at Canada Post, retiring in 2019.
John was the biggest Exeter City Football Club fan, watching their weekly games and traveling twice to Wembly stadium as they played for advancement from League 2 to League 1. He loved to visit home and spend time with Lyddi & Imy.
His second love was trains, he was a kid at heart and loved to collect sets. He was excited to share his “toys” with his grandsons Ben & Eli. John was fun and generous, so loved by his family and those who knew him.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday February 9th, 3pm at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, Rev. Kevin Little officiating with reception to follow.
