Bassett, John Gilbert
John died April 18, 2023, at the age of 87. He had a long career with CMHC in Ottawa, St. John’s and Halifax, where he was also a soccer referee for many years. When retired, he moved to Florida. From childhood, John had a fascination with trains, in Birmingham, England where he was born. He rode the rails there again when he visited in 2017, and in 2019 took a cross-Canada trip by train.
Besides his parents, Maisie and Gilbert, he was pre-deceased by his infant daughter Kathleen; brothers Alex and Stephen; sister Betty; and, second wife Gerri Lyons in 2016. Along with wife Mary Eden, he was a proud parent of Roy, Bruce (Heather) and Karen (Kevin). He is survived by his grandchildren, Isaiah, Simone, Gabriel, Elliot and Carter. John will also be greatly missed by brother Robert (Marian).
