Joanne Thompson, 77, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, died peacefully on August 16th, 2015 at home. She was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Irene (Sieniewicz) Diachuk, her sister Jean Irving, niece Janet Ozon, and daughter-in-law Mabel Eng.
Joanne took great joy in serving her community. She was an active volunteer serving on many Boards, including the Halifax Regional School Board, Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority, and the Nova Scotia Medical Board. Her kind, calm and compassionate manner provided comfort over the 10 years she volunteered with Capital Health Palliative Care.
Joanne enjoyed an active life with her cherished friends rotating bowling, golf, curling and bridge throughout each season. She was a Past President and the longest active member of the Ladies Division of the Halifax Curling Club.
Joanne was an excellent cook and a gracious hostess. She was equally comfortable setting an elaborate table for eight, or planning a party for fifty. She was the first call whenever eight loaves of tea sandwiches (crusts removed) and a couple pans of squares were required. Her most prominent characteristic was the speed with which she carried out every activity, from swinging a golf club, to throwing a curling stone, to playing a hand of bridge. Most of all Joanne was a good friend, supportive mother and a caring and devoted grandmother. Her spirit will continue with all of us whenever we eat an egg salad sandwich, restock the candy drawer or have a piece of pie for breakfast.
Joanne is survived by daughters Susan Healy (Michael), Christine McCarthy (Richard), son Stewart, grandchildren Kathleen and Sarah Healy, Sean and Lisa McCarthy, Ethan and Megan Thompson.
The family would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Scovil and special caregivers Mary, Angela and Brenda.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, on Wednesday August 19th 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Thursday August 20th at 11:00 a.m. All Saints Cathedral, 1330 Martello Street, Halifax, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory to the QEII Foundation – PALC - Palliative Care or a charity of choice.
