Joan attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Dalhousie University and the Maritime College of Social Work. Her entire career as a social worker was spent serving veterans at Camp Hill Hospital until her retirement in 1986. Throughout her life, Joan was active in many civic and charitable organizations. She was a long-time member of the Halifax Infirmary Auxiliary, the Halifax District Council of the Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs, and the Antiquarian Society. She was also member and past president of the Junior League of Halifax as well as the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society. Joan enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and politics. She spent many happy summers at “The Farm” at West Lake Ainslie where she loved entertaining friends and family.
She is survived by her niece, Elizabeth Markiewicz, and her nephews, John, Greg and Paul Murphy as well as eight grand nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents and sisters, Anne Murphy and Barbara Walker. The family would also like to recognize Donna Wyse, Joan’s long-time caregiver, for all her service to the family.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Joan’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Memorial mass will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 10:30am from St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford Street, Halifax followed by reception.
