It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joan Shoveller, age 80, on Saturday, 4th January 2014, at the QE II Hospital in Halifax. She lived a vibrant life and her generous spirit inspired all those who knew her. She was born in Dartmouth to Mary Alice (Orr) and Henry Baldwin in 1933. Predeceased by her wonderful husband, Rod Shoveller (1991). Loving mother to Tim (Jeannie Barteaux), Bruce (Kim Quackenbush) and Lynda (Scott Ellison). Proud Nan to Michael, Emma and Ben Shoveller and Gregory, Claire and Timothy Ellison. She was happy to volunteer for many causes that she cared deeply about. Joan was a proud and active member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. She also was an active parishioner at St. Mary’s Basilica in Halifax and previously St. Paul’s in Dartmouth. Joan was a long-time supporter of the Dalhousie University Men’s Basketball Team, as well as an avid bridge player. Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 6-8 pm, Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 10 am at St. Mary’s Basilica in Halifax. Following a reception at St. Mary's Cathederal Basilica, burial Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Joan will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Thanks to the attending paramedics for their professionalism and support as well as the nurses and doctors who attended to Mom. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Molly Appeal for Medical Research, the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame or the Rod Shoveller Memorial Bursary.
