Joan lived a very humble life that she devoted to her family. Her kindness and generosity were felt by all that knew her.
Together she and husband Clarence enjoyed many years at their cottage in East Chezzetcook hosting their annual Labor Day picnic. Joan loved her home and welcomed family, friends and neighbors anytime of the day to enjoy a cup of hot tea and homemade goods. She loved all animals and made sure they always had a treat and a cold drink. Christmas was her favorite time of year. Each year spanned a three day celebration of food, gifts, love and laughter.
Joan was employed for 25 years as a chocolate dipper at Moirs Chocolates. Her giving and caring spirit saw her waiting at the door to greet and provide a cold drink and snacks to her letter carrier, paperboy, refuse collectors and contractors working in her area or on her property.
She spent many years as a non-registered volunteer befriending residents and providing her company, care and companionship at Northwood Centre. Joan was an active member of her community. She was involved in the neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP) which established a beautiful playground/park on Fuller Terrace which is enjoyed by all. A memorial will be placed in the park in Joan’s memory.
She is survived by her sister Theresa Bowden of Lower Sackville and brother Michael Shea (Diane) of Halifax, stepdaughter; Hilda, stepsons; Mickey and Wayne, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by husband Clarence W. Martin, mother Mary E. Shea, sister Stella Hoadley, brothers Harold, William, Frank, George, Kenny, Gerald and Vernon, stepson Ronald and stepdaughter Gloria all of Halifax.
As a family, we would like to thank Joan’s neighbors for their friendship and the love they showed to her. We would also like to thank the staff of Arborstone Enhanced Care for the exceptional care she received over the last year.
There will be no visitation at Joan’s request. The funeral service will take place at St. Patrick’s Church, 2263 Brunswick Street, Halifax on Friday September 9, 2022 at 10:30am, Father Paul officiating. Burial to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, NS.
