It is with profound sadness that the Ponsford family regrets to announce the passing of Jeannette Pamela Ponsford on May 14th, 2023. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family comforting her. Born in London, England on August 7th, 1932, she grew up during the Second World War and endured the bombing of London.
Jeannette's journey through life has so many chapters and happy moments. The family travelled extensively and covered much of globe in their early years, visiting numerous countries along the way including Portugal, Egypt, India, and Malaysia. She lived in London until 1962, where her two sons were born, Paul and Mark. She travelled for 5 weeks aboard an ocean liner to Australia, where she stayed for 3 years and had her first daughter Suzanne. She then moved to Cardiff, Wales in 1965 where Alyson was born. In 1969 the family immigrated to Canada where her third son Steven was born in 1971. She remained in Halifax, N.S. and created a beautiful life for her family. She always kept her homeland England in her heart and spirit. Our mother was the true matriarch of our family and created special lifelong memories that will be cherished and never forgotten.
She had an exemplary career for many years, with a BSc in microbiology and chemistry. Before her retirement, she worked as a laboratory technologist at Bedford Institute of Oceanography. She ended her working career managing a market research business.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She loved music and dancing and was a wonderful ballroom dancer and teacher at Edgett Dance Studio for many years. She even taught two of her grandchildren to compete in dance competitions.
She was predeceased by her mother and father, Kathleen and George Peebles, and her beloved son Mark Ponsford. She is survived by her brother John Peebles (Anne) and four children: Paul Ponsford, Suzanne Wade (Chris), Alyson Flood (Rory) and Steven Ponsford. She has 7 grandchildren: Julia (Jose), John (Christie), Kurt, Sarah, Chad, Conor (Kaitlyn), Ciara and 3 great grandchildren: Jordyn, Corey and Hannah.
She was always there for us in every aspect of our lives to help guide us with her wisdom and love. She was a dedicated mother who kept in daily contact with all her family. Mom was always there to help with household projects, even if it was just making sandwiches and tea or holding the ladder.
She instilled in her children the importance of education, and the benefits of hard work and determination. As we reflect on her life, we are filled with fond memories of a strong independent woman, full of integrity, honor and respect. We will cherish the memories of her love and selflessness towards us all. She will be dearly missed but we will keep her forever in our hearts.
We would like to extend our thanks to Maplestone for their extraordinary care of our mother. Everyone is welcome to join us for a Celebration of Life gathering at J.A. Snow Funeral Home on Lacewood Drive in Halifax on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 from 11am-2:00pm.
