SMITH, Jean Henrietta Victoria – of Bedford, passed away peacefully surrounded by her three children, Mark (Sarah), Marlo (Billy) and Michelle (Andrew). Born and raised in Maccan, NS, she was the only child of Martha (Baetens of Belgium) and Eldon Dunlop.
She is predeceased by her parents as well as the love of her life, Wayne Smith.
Jean worked as a bank teller in Amherst for the Bank of Nova Scotia before moving to
Truro and working in the Student Placement Office at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. Sadly, Wayne passed away far too young leaving Jean to raise their three children, which formed a very special bond between them. After her early retirement, Jean moved to St. John, NB with her partner Doug Mollins. His death in 2009 prompted Jean to return to Nova Scotia and settle on the Bedford Waterfront. For the last 8 years, Jean’s time has been consumed with being Nanny or “Nina” to her eight grandchildren: Myah, Norah, Jackson, Zoe, Isaiah, Ella, Maria and newly born, Quinn. Along with her children, the grandchildren have been the light of her life and it clearly showed whenever she talked about them or spent time with them. The feeling was definitely mutual and for that reason, she will be greatly missed by them all.
Jean will also be missed by her many friends and family from Belgium to the Maritimes.
Her children will take comfort knowing that she is now reunited with their father after 25 years apart.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of the nurses and aid staff on 5A at the VG, the Palliative Care doctors, as well as Dr. Bentley and Dr. MacDonald.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax (902) 455-0531 on Sunday, September 30th from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Service will take place at St. Ignatius Church, Bedford Hwy on Tuesday, October 2nd at 10:00am. Interment at a later date.
