We are saddened to share the news of the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Janet Elizabeth (MacGregor) MacQuarrie. She passed away peacefully on July 11, 2022 at Northwood’s Ivany Place in Bedford, NS.
She was born on July 27, 1941 in New Glasgow, NS, the daughter of the late James Drummond (Drum) MacGregor and Hazel (MacDonald) MacGregor.
Janet is survived by her brother Robert (Lynne) MacGregor of New Glasgow, NS; sister Susan (Peter) Stoddard of Ammon, NB; children Scott of Oakville, ON, Anne (David) Gordon of Oregon; Lynne of Halifax; Jan (Colin) Waldschutz of Saint John, NB; grandsons Neil and Andrew Waldschutz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janet graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Education before getting married and starting a family. While at Dal, Janet was crowned Engineering Queen, despite not being an engineering student.
While raising her family, Janet was actively involved in the Junior League, a VON board member, volunteer with Saint David’s Auxiliary, and often the “Class Mom”.
Janet had lifelong friends going back to grade school and enjoyed lunches and visits with them.
She was an avid knitter and reader. Her other brief artistic pursuits included stained glass and tole painting at which she exceled, and her children all have special pieces of her work. She was adept at solving crosswords, Lexicons, and other word puzzles, which helped keep her mind sharp. She was known for her hospitality and wonderful sense of humour. Ever humble, she was the epitome of ‘grace under fire’. In her later years, many commented on her positive attitude in dealing with her health challenges.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the health professionals and staff who cared for Janet at Northwood’s Ivany Place in Bedford, especially Kim, Debby, Shane, Carolyn, Rosa, Sylvia, Gloria, and others along with her previous caregivers at Maplestone and Parkland Clayton Park.
An informal celebration of life gathering for Janet will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS B3S0E1.
Memorial donations may be made to Soul’s Harbour Mission, Family SOS, MS Society, or any charity of your choice such as the SPCA since she loved animals.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.JASnowFuneralHome.com for the MacQuarrie family.
