ROOD, James William (Jim) - 98 passed away on Sunday April 08, 2012 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late James Foster Rood and Lucy R (Charlton). He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and in addition to his parents he was predeceased by his three sisters, Maud Clark, Marion Tulloch and Irene (Dolly) Young. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Phyllis (Connors), daughters Jeanette (Kevin Manion) Ottawa, Julie (Greg Hambleton) Halifax and Jill (David Boran) Halifax and five grandchildren, Lesley & Laura Hambleton, Alison & Stephanie Hallett and Jamie Boran. He was a proud survivor of the Halifax Explosion. Prior to World War II he was originally employed by The Chronicle Star and then spent several years as Wireless Operator on various vessels including the “Lady Nelson” and the “Lady Hawkins”. During war years he was with the Radio Branch of the Department of Transport at coastal stations and spent a winter in Labrador assisting with the construction and installation of the radio beacon system at Goose Bay. At the end of the war and until his retirement in 1979 he was employed by Nova Scotia Light & Power in various capacities. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A chapel memorial service and reception will be held in the J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Friday, April 13 at 2:00pm, with private family internment in the Farview Lawn Cemetery to follow.
