Dear Teresa,
Marlene and I are very sorry to learn of Hugh’s  passing today.  Hugh was a neighbour and good friend. He worked  with great competence  on our house in Hatchet Lake years ago, installing siding, building decks and doing other home projects for us. “Three wheeling” and exploring “ gold bugging” The Hatchet  Lake and Waverley areas  were interests  we shared  frequently.
Hugh  was a  true gentleman.

I only met Hugh a couple times when visiting his dear wife Theresa. From all indications he was a man’s man, who loved his family and his furry friends…that was enough for me !

We were so sorry to read of Hugh’s passing.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.



It is with fondness that I recall my Uncle Hughie (Hugh), from my numerous summer vacations in the '90s.  Often my Uncle could be seen smoking at the back door of his home, and keeping a watchful eye.
In the early '80s I received for Christmas, a toy requiring assembly.   My parents were baffled!   Alas, by New Years,  still no success.
During a festive visit the same week, from Aunt Tess and Uncle Hugh, he eyed the toy and asked for the instructions.  After determining  the instructions were "largely useless", my uncle set about assembling the toy, kindly explaining with pedagogy, each stage of assembly.  Then he wound the toy and it walked away!
I will miss my Uncle Hugh, and never forget his famous quote to my father during a hunting trip at Lake Williams in 1982, and I quote: "I got'im, Art, and he's a big one!'

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write this condolence.  I remember Uncle Hugh as a gregarious man who loved to get a rise out of us kids, when we would visit.  His laugh was infectious and his presence was always felt.  I have such fond memories from my visits to Hatchet Lake, and Uncle Hugh is part of each and everyone of them.  My fondest of all revolves around his workshop, filled with a plethora of peculiar, eccentric tools and equipment - a real cabinet of curiosity.  It was a a space where I always longed to linger - a place to be explored and discovered.  One time, as I lingered maybe a little longer than I should have, he stumbled upon me, recognized  my interest, and nurtured my curiosity by explaining his process of making.  I sat in awe of what he did in that tiny room in the basement,  and also his kindness  in recognizing my interest and nurturing my curiosity.  As an adult craftsman, I know now the sacrosanct of a craftsman's studio, and I treasure, with vivid recall, that space, that conversation, that day,  He was a master craftsman - the first of many I would meet; his giving personality does not come as a surprise, because that is the true nature of a craftsman.

Thanks Uncle Hugh.  A moment can last a lifetime.

Hugh, we have been friends for nearly 60 years, and we shared many wonderful times together.  You leave a void in our family and in our hearts.  Rest in Peace, Hugh.

Teresa.......although I did not know Hugh I did know a lot about him through Cousin Ellie.  He must have been a fine person.  I send my condolences to you and his family and to and to all my Canning cousins.  Sorry to be late with this message.  I just became aware of Hugh's passing today. Annie and I send our sincerest condolences and thoughts to you.
Uncle Hugh was probably the single most masculine influence in my young adult life.  I always viewed him as a man's man, in pursuit of manly activities and pastimes.  He was an authentic outdoorsman, the like of outdoor magazine articles.  His quiet confidence and savoir faire for the manly pursuits were unmistakable -always a 4x4 vehicle; construction - no matter how complex (mastered); renovations - no matter how challenging (mastered); from motorcycles to fishing, camping, hunting, boating, firearms, and prospecting for gold; a true man's  man!
My earliest memory of Uncle Hugh is of him keeping a watchful eye on me to ensure I did not follow Missy, under the verandah/  deck.  The deck would have been the original deck on the house.  Anyway, the deck had a few missing or rotten boards, and from the smile on Uncle Hugh's face, he didn't seem to mind watching me, even if I tried to defy his instructions not to follow the dog into the cavern.  I always remember his big smile, no matter how old I was, and  he always had a large grin when he saw us.  His gifts to me were always of the outdoor variety and best quality in construction, from fishing poles, to knives, to tents and Cub Scout tools and gear.  I am more pleased than ever that I purchased a number of firearms from Uncle Hugh.  They are even more meaningful to me now.
I always think of Uncle Hugh when I hear the country song by Luke Bryant, "Huntin, Fishin and Lovin Every Day".  Now and for the rest of my days, I will immediately think of him.
Annie and I are sad.  I don't pray often, but I will pray for you and Uncle Hugh's soul.  Be strong and hold those memories in your heart.  We love you.  Rest in Peace Uncle Hugh.

To Theresa and Hugh's Family:
It is with sadness that Amos and I offer our condolences, and I must say  to ourselves as well.  Hugh was a member of our family for almost sixty years.
When he fell in love with Tess, he didn't realize her siblings came as part of the package.  First Bernie and me, and a few years later our brother Martin.  Hugh accepted us all.  He had a car and drove us and our friends to dances and marshmallow roasts at the beach, while we all sang our hearts out - there and back.
As Martin got older, Hugh took him on many hunting and fishing trips.  They also shared an enthusiasm for motor cycles and they both had several bikes over the years.
I admired Hugh for the care and respect he had for his Uncle Neil.
Uncle Neil liked hunting, and at his advanced age, he didn't go by himself.  Every hunting season Hugh arranged for Uncle Neil to be with him on one or more trips.  Hugh provided everything for Uncle Neil's needs and comfort.  All Uncle Neil had to do was  grab his hunting jacket and go.  Imagine that!
I sincerely appreciate my brother-in-law and thank him for the kindness he showed to my aging parents, and to my three children, as they were growing up.  
Hugh was a most capable person and we will always remember his plans, schemes and projects.  
He will be missed by all our family,

I have so many fond memories of sharing time with Hugh during both hunting and fishing trips it is hard to pick one to share. I do remember when I was only sixteen Hugh took me on one of my first hunting trips to his favourite spot on Lynn Mountain. Early that morning Hugh shot a huge sixteen point Buck. After field dressing it he had to cut it in two so we could get it back to the car. We worked until almost noon to get it out to the car and then Hugh looked at me and said, now lets' go hunting. (in those days you were allowed two deer)
He was the most innovative and talented problem solver I have ever met, and if you were in any kind of difficulty he could solve any problem with bubble gum and mechanics wire.
