Macdonald, Hugh Ross, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on July 13, 2024 at the age of 89 in Halifax. Born to Lewis R. and Beulah Macdonald on October 18, 1934, Hugh grew up in Sydney, N.S. where he attended Colby Elementary, Sydney Academy, and St. FX Junior college. He then went on to graduate from Mount Allison University in 1957. Hugh was an avid tennis player, winning the boys double open championship in Ottawa in 1952. Hugh would work for the Bathurst Power and Paper Company, moving to Ontario where he would meet and later marry Carolyn Macdonald (Cormack). Returning to Nova Scotia to settle in Halifax, Hugh worked for the Nova Scotia Power Commision, Halifax Shipyards, then the Department of Labour. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Labour in 1982. He would also serve as the chair of CAALL (Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation) and was involved in the enactment of legislation for WHMIS. Hugh was a devoted husband, and proud father, who coached hockey and shared his love of the outdoors through his participation with Scouts Canada Leadership. Hugh cherished his time at the cottage on Lake Scugog in Ontario. Those who knew Hugh, could appreciate his Cape Breton humour and a good sense of the ridiculous. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, sons Stuart Macdonald, Ian Macdonald (Michele Garrett-Jones), and granddaughter Ella. The family would like to acknowledge the Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Center for their caring support over the years. A funeral service will take place at the Rockingham United Church on Wednesday, July 24 at 2pm followed by a short reception. Visitation will be from 12:45pm-1:30pm at the church. Donations can be made to the Brunswick Street Mission in Halifax or Dalhousie Medical Research.
