I was fortunate to have lived my Bi-Hi and Dartmouth High days at 1 Thistle St. and claimed McCormick's Store as the social hub of the neighbourhood, or perhaps what seemed to be my whole universe at the time. Many, many hours of my youth had been spent leaning on the pop cooler solving the problems of the world with Eric and Helen. 

That dialogue, in the form of letters and phone calls, continued after my family moved back to Ontario in the late 1960's. Helen kept me updated on the news of my old neighbourhood and the people I knew. Helen had amazing recall for people, incidents and dates. Eric and Helen attend Carolyn's and my wedding in what is now Mississauga back in the early 1970's and we always looked forward to her letter every December. I would respond in kind but my penmanship was embarrassing compared to her's. The phone eventually replaced our letters.

My last conversation with her was about a month before her passing. This conversation was not the usual upbeat description of family life in Halifax, but, one that troubled me deeply. In her terms she had to muster the strength to reach out and I knew instinctively that it was probably the last time I would talk to my friend.

My condolences, not only to Myles and Michael, but to all that claimed her as a friend.

Myles and Michael, our condolences to you and your families on the passing of your Mom. I lived at 4 Slayter Street all of my young and school years at Bi-Hi and Dartmouth High. Your Mother and Dad were like a second family to me. They were both so gracious and friendly every time I visited McCormick's Store. It was a safe and fun place to be, and I was there at least twice a day. When I got married your Mom and Dad came up to the Valley to be there for our celebration. It was like having the King and Queen of the neighborhood there. I now explained to my grandchildren every time I pass the store about the two fantastic people that ran that store when I grew up in the area.
My wife and I just want to let you both know how much a positive influence your parents had on us.
