It is with great love and sadness that we announce the passing of Helen “Betty” Arnold, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Born in Newfoundland, Betty moved to Halifax as a young girl where she later met her husband, raised her two beautiful daughters, and cared for her grandchildren with fierce devotion. She went to be with the Lord on October 28th at the Halifax Infirmary, surrounded by her family.
Betty is survived by her husband of 71 years, George; her two girls Debbie (Stan) Slauenwhite and Darlene (Lester) Hanley; her grandchildren Shaun (Michelle), Jeff (Heidi), Tim (Nicole), Katie (Tom), and Krystyn (Chad); and her great-grandchildren Braeya, Analeigh, Lennie, Josie, Ethan, Xavier, Martin, and Levi. She was the last surviving member of her Newfoundland family, predeceased by her parents and nine siblings.
Nan was everything you could want in a grandmother. An avid knitter and bowler, she remained active until her later years, and took many trips with her family, boldly liberating essentials from restaurants when our hotels proved lacking. She happily welcomed her family in her home at every opportunity, offering us her delicious shortbreads, apple crisp, yogurt pie, and famed pre-boxed pies. Nan never missed a birthday, concert, or graduation, and was enormously proud of all of her grandchildren’s achievements, however big or small. She leaves behind a legacy of unending love and support that has carried on with each successive generation.
We would like to thank all of the medical staff who cared for Betty in her final days, especially Dr. Egan and the many nurses at the Halifax Infirmary. Their kindness and warmth were a great comfort to Betty and the family.
Betty will be buried in a private graveside service, but all who remember her are invited to attend a celebration of her life at Full Gospel Church on November 9th at 2pm, followed by a time of visitation with the family.
