Pottie, Harry Edward – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and uncle who passed away peacefully on July 10th 2012 surrounded by his family. Born on December 26th 1919, he was the son of the late Frank and Evangeline (Mombourquette) Pottie, of L’Ardoise Cape Breton. Harry began working at the Halifax Shipyards at the age of 20 and retired after 45 years as the Chief Stores Keeper. He was an avid sports fan; Harry was widely known as an outstanding softball and baseball player in the 1940’s and 1950’s. His position as catcher garnered him numerous awards and newspaper write ups which became the centre of many stories he shared with his family and friends; he was also a championship bowler. One of his proudest memories was winning the Maritime Softball Championship as a member of the Halifax Shipyards team. He was devoted to his family and his faith. He always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his blue eyes and a wonderful sense of humor, which will be greatly missed. He leaves his wife of 67 years, Phyllis (Sears), children Beverly; Greg (Diane); Heather; and Debbie (Paul Carnell); his grandchildren Scott McDonald (Ray) of Vancouver; Kelly McDonald with whom he had a special relationship with; and Michael Pottie and Maureen Pottie; as well as several nieces and nephews; extended family members and his special buddy Tigger. Those who crossed paths with Harry knew what a strong, genuine, loving, kind and caring person he was who never complained and always appreciated everything that was done for him. Harry was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his siblings Frank (Kathleen deceased); Arthur (Mary Deceased); Leonard (Eloise); Clifford (Margaret deceased); Joseph (Marion deceased); Gerald (Margaret deceased); Raymond (Gloria); Edna Westhaver (Frank deceased); Marie Martell (Albert); and Dorothy Ascroft (Allan deceased). Visitation will take place at Cruikshank’s funeral home on Windsor St, Halifax on Friday July 13th from 6-8 pm. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, July 14th at 10am at Blessed Mother of Teresa (formerly St. Stephens) Normandy Drive, Halifax. Internment will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Barry Clarke, who was not only Harry’s physician but a family friend who guided all of us through this process with caring words and understanding.
Dad/Granddad: God blessed us with a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. We’ll forever miss those smiling blue eyes, your quick wit and your strong values and faith. There will never be another like you. We love you with all of our hearts.
