Grace was born on July 5, 1925, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, to her parents John and Irene (Douglas) Gunn.
She attended New Glasgow Highschool graduating with the class of 1942. She went on to graduate from the Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947 and received a BScN from Dalhousie University in 1965.
Grace was a devoted and compassionate nurse employed at the Victoria General Hospital from 1947 to 1973 when she retired as the Assistant Director of Nursing.
Grace was predeceased by her brother Ian Gunn, first husband, Howard Grant, step-daughter Shirley Grant, and second husband Milledge Hicks.
Grace had many interests including travel, reading, watching Jeopardy, bowling, playing bridge, rug-hooking, and in particular, spending time with her family and friends.
Grace was the epitome of her name. She gave everything she had to anyone who needed it, no matter the circumstances and with no expectations of anything in return. She had a gift of providing loving care, kindness and comfort - as a nurse, wife, step-mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Grace was fun-loving, understanding, open-minded. compassionate, and loyal.
She had endless patience and fun with her grandchildren who felt her love and support and admired her strength, intellect, virtue, and kindness.
Grace was dearly loved. She will be greatly missed as a step-mother to Margaret Grant (Terry Fulmer), Halifax; Judith Adams (Peter Adams deceased), Loughton Essex England; and Ellen Hicks (Nancy Shield) Napanee, Ontario; a grandmother (“Grammy”) to Margo Fulmer (Paul Saunders) and Jed Fulmer, and a great-grandmother (“GG”) to Veda and Edie Saunders, Halifax.
The family wishes to send a special heartfelt thank you to the excellent staff of Melville Gardens who cared for Grace with the utmost care and compassion, stepped in as Grace’s family during the Covid-19 visitation restrictions, and then supported Grace’s family in sharing their grief.
Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of Grace’s life will be held at Church Brook Cemetery in Little Harbour, Pictou County, NS at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Grace to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
