Gladys Mae Urquhart, age 97 of Halifax, passed away March 23, 2015 at Shannex Parkstone Enhanced Care. Born in Stellarton, Pictou County, she was the daughter of James and Ada (Fraser) Thompson. Gladys was a life member of United Church Women. She completed all advanced certificates from Nova Scotia College of Art before they granted degrees. Mum thrived on her involvement and friendships made volunteering at churches in Halifax and Beaconsfield, Montreal, GGIT, Boy Scouts (Cubs), United Appeal, Canadian Red Cross, IWK Painting Group, IWK Bridge Players, Meals on Wheels, and was one of the founding members of Chebucto Link.
Mum was most proud of and amazed to live long enough to enjoy her grandchildren, spouses and great-grandchildren. When mum and dad moved to Montreal, they gave up sailing at Armdale Yacht Club for golfing at Como Golf Club, Hudson, Quebec. Gladys curled at Halifax Ladies Curling Club and Pointe Claire Curling Club, was a member of Ashburn Golf Club and bowled with the Twenty Leaguers until four years ago, and golfed until she was 88 years old.
Mum’s peaceful, serene moments were found while painting, throwing clay pots and sketching jaunts around Nova Scotia and Quebec. We will miss her presence in our lives but are left with wonderful memories.
A special thanks to RJF Home Care Ladies and Management who made it possible for Mum to remain in her home as long as she did. Thanks also to Northwood Home Care. We wish to express our appreciation to all the staff members of these facilities who provided such great care for mum these last couple of years: The Berkeley, Green Street, Shannex Parkland Estates, Drummond Hall, and Shannex Parkstone Enhanced care.
