While we knew this day was getting closer each year, it is still a shock to the family that Mom has actually passed. We take comfort in the fact that she passed peacefully. We are proud of the fact that Mom lived her life on her own terms and remained in her own home to the end. She would not accept any thoughts of going into an assisted living facility. To put it in Mom's words “The only way I am leaving this house is feet first.” Those who knew Mom can easily imagine her saying exactly that.
Countless lives were disrupted by the Second World War so it is not surprising that it affected the plans of Art and Gertie who fell in love in Cape Breton. Dad worked at the Pictou Shipyard on new and war-damaged ships and construction at Point Edward. Mom moved to Halifax to work at the Green Lantern Restaurant on Barrington Street and resided at a chaperoned boarding house for young women. With the war finally over, Mom and Dad married in 1946.
Mom had two things in her life that mattered above all else. They were her family and her faith in God. You only had to ask Mom about her family, and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, to be aware of the former. As to the latter, Mom attended Mass regularly, in person for eighty plus years and via television and home visits when her mobility declined. She was a proud member of the CWL and a regular volunteer at the annual parish fairs. Her hand knitted wool socks were a very popular item. They were popular to the point that she had regular customers who waited for the door to open on the first day in order to make a beeline to Mom's table and buy out her entire stock.
There were so many people who touched Mom's life that to recognize a few would be a disservice to the remainder. However, you all should know this...she appreciated and cherished your friendship, help and guidance while passing through this life.
