Gertrude died peacefully at home on January 23, 2020 in her 95th year. Born in Saint John New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Stanley Dixon Dacre and Beatrice Sarah (MacKenzie) Dacre. In 1944 she married Harvey Charles Petite, whom she had met while he had boarded with her family. Gertie served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Being a part of the RCAF community post war, Gertie and Harvey raised five children while stationed across Canada. Gertie loved a good game of bridge and socializing with her friends. She and Harvey enjoyed the Gorsebrook RCAF dances. She worked as an admitting clerk at the Children’s hospital and spent twenty-five years as the medical receptionist for Dr Joan Crosby until they both retired. She enjoyed traveling, and connected with her father’s family in England. In her later years, she enjoyed reading and knitting, and the good friends she had in both the Anglican and United Church women’s groups. A life-long Anglican, she enjoyed being part of the worshiping community and served on the Parish Council of St Matthias in Halifax.
She is survived by sister Beatrice Lockett (Renforth, New Brunswick); son Robert (Linda) in Leduc, Alberta; daughters Barbara (Barry), Marion (Pat), and Kathy (David), all of Halifax, and grandchildren William, Tylor, Steven, Marcy, Severine, Isaac, Jeremy, and Sam, and three great-grandchildren. She was very close to her niece Jan.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband Harvey; daughter Jeannie; and brother George.
Visitation will take place on Monday, January 27 from 6:00-8:00 pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 336 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. The Funeral Eucharist will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 28 at the Anglican Church of the Apostles, 6670 Bayers Road, Halifax.
Special thanks to her friend Pat Karsten, who provided so much personal care for Gert through her later years.
