FRANCIS, Gerald Arthur – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald (Ged) passing on Sunday May 17th, 2015 in Palliative Care Unit at the Victoria Hospital in Halifax at the age of 84.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba , he was the son of Percy and Della Francis. He was predeceased by his wife: Fanny, his parents, sisters; Rose Rodriquez, Monya Davidson, brothers; James, Douglas, Gordon Francis. He is survived by Sister in laws, Laura Francis, Chilliwack BC, Nova Francis, Halifax, NS, Dorance Francis, Shad Bay as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ged attended schools in the Halifax area and graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and had a long established career in business. Ged was employed with the Nova Scotia Co-Operative Abattoir for many years as General Manager, he was District Manager for Baxter Dairies for many years and ended his work career as Vice President of Corporate Development for Farmer’s Dairy, retiring in 1995. Early in his life, Ged was an Aircrew Officer with the Royal Canadian Air Force where he developed a passion for flying, ultimately becoming a private pilot and eventually owned and flew his own float plane. In Ged’s early years he was a leading scorer in the Halifax and District Suburban Hockey League and was gifted with incredible speed and scoring touch. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ged and Fanny built their own log cabin in Mooseland and spent much time there.
Ged was a long time member of Ashburn Golf and Country Club as well as a former Director. In retirement Ged and Fanny wintered in Florida and continued their passion for golf together.
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of The Victoria General Hospital Palliative Care Unit 7A, as well as close neighbors in Halifax, Jamie and Charlotte Cochran, close neighbors in Florida, Carlton and Linda Brown. A special thank you to amazing friend Joanna Hogan for tending to Ged’s needs during this difficult process.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 11 from 6-8 pm at Ashburn Golf Club.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice. No funeral at the request of Ged, however the family will be planning a memorial celebration of his life in the very near future.
