It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Gerry, who passed away very peacefully but unexpectedly in his home, on the morning of January 25, 2012.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of George Albert Sampson and Catherine Ann Lawrence, of Cape Breton, NS.
Gerry was a kind and generous man; private, reserved, and very witty. He kept to himself, and never wanted to bring attention but was always willing to lend a hand and never afraid of hard work. He was from humble beginnings but was the first of his family to move to the suburbs to raise five kids. His 11 grandchildren were his pride and joy, and they all knew him well. He was often heard joking “ if I had known how enjoyable grandchildren were I would have skipped having kids of my own!” He was dearly loved by all of us and trusted by those who knew him.
He was co-founder of Bounty Print Ltd, where his caring ways were evident in the respect he showed to staff, suppliers and customers. Dad had a gentle, giving spirit and was always willing to help out. He never asked for much and would often get frustrated with Mum, his wife of over 56 years, who would buy things for him that he would say he did not need, often returning them without opening the package. He was always quick with a smile and often a silly joke, and genuinely fun to be with. He had a sharp wit and would always find a way to cheer you up with his genuine sense of humor. Tenderness and devotion to family were evident as he sang his grandchildren to sleep; those same corny songs he sang to his own children many years ago! Raising five gregarious kids, he was forever telling us to “be careful” even though some of us have reached a half century in age.
He was a devoted father, husband, grandfather and brother dedicated to the Catholic faith and we will miss him tremendously. Today a great man passed our way but we know he has gone to be with his father in heaven, and for that we are truly grateful.
Gerry is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Anne (McCormick) Sampson of Bedford, NS, four sons, Mark (Cinde) of Vancouver, Paul (Nancy) of Vancouver, Peter (Janice) of Vancouver, Dan (Lori) of Vancouver, Maria (Jock Murray) of Halifax. Living siblings: Madeline Whiffen, Marie Couper, Ernie & Gerald Sampson, and 11 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Florance & Dolly and brothers Alphonse “Al”, Alex, Tommy and Joseph “Red”.
Arrangments are entrusted to J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax (902)455-0531
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Saint Benedict Parish 45 Radcliffe Drive, Halifax.
