on April 20th, 2021. Born in Halifax on August 1st, 1937 to Eleanor (Hughes) and George Randall, he was the youngest of 4 children and was pre-deceased by his parents as well as, brothers Jack and Graham and sister Lorraine.
Growing up as a young boy in the Hydrostone area of Halifax he enjoyed the tightly knit community of
the North End and throughout his life always fondly recalled the days of living on Kane Street in his
youth. Losing his father at the age of four, having passed away at sea during World War II while serving
on the Acadia, he forged lifelong bonds with many in the North End.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s University in 1957 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Dalhousie University in 1960 just several months shy of his 23rd birthday. Hughes practiced law privately with the firms of; Pace and MacIntosh; Paton, Paton and Randall; and Randall, Mc Neil and Church and was also the Solicitor for the Hospital Commission in his early career. He was appointed to
the bench of the Provincial Court in 1974 and worked as a Judge for 28 years until his retirement in 2002.
Hughes was active in community affairs throughout his life. He was a proud St. Mary’s
University Alumni and served on the Board of Governors and was a long-time member of the Centennial
Rink Commission. He also served on the Executive and as President of the Provincial Court Judges
Association.
A fiercely proud Haligonian and Nova Scotian Hughes often volunteered at events being hosted in the
City and enjoyed sharing stories, history and local hospitality to both Canadians and International
visitors. He delighted in meeting people who were first visiting the region and would endeavour to
ensure they enjoyed their time in his beloved Nova Scotia.
An avid sports fan he supported his alumni and local sports teams including his favorite
Mooseheads and it was at these events where he cherished the time spent with the many dear friends
he had known through the years.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his loving wife Sheila (Horne), children Jennifer (Lyle) & Sean
(Jamie), nieces and nephews and many extended relatives and lifelong friends. Over his last years his
grace, strength and will was an inspiration to all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hope Cottage, Chalice or Hospice Halifax. The family invites
you to share stories and memories on the online condolences at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com. A mass and celebration of his life will be held in the future when we can all come together to celebrate his life and memory.
