He was born in Halifax on December 14, 1949 to Bernard and Emma (Saulnier) Theriault of Meteghan Station and Halifax. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Marie (Robertson) Theriault, his son Mark (Stephanie) and daughter Melanie (Rich) Coutts; grandchildren Austin and Mya Theriault and Emma Coutts. Also surviving are siblings Betty (George) Tupper, Darrell (Diane) Theriault and Earl (Pamela) Theriault, and many nieces and nephews.
Garry was educated in Halifax schools and worked as a Sheet Metal Worker for several companies including F.L. Worth Sheet Metal, Semple Gooder Roofing and HMC Dockyard from which he retired. He served as maintenance person at St. Agnes Church where he could often be seen at 5am shoveling snow before his work day at HMC Dockyard. Always ready to lend a helping hand or a tool from the “shed”, he will be deeply missed by friends and strangers alike.
Garry was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed many years playing Friday night hockey and bowling. As a Grandpa (Bapa) he was always keen to attend his grandchildren’s activities and games, and was known to ride his motorcycle late into the fall to travel near and far to cheer them on. Garry and Marie enjoyed many hours motorcycle riding in Canada and USA. Another retirement hobby began unexpectedly with the arrival of a swarm of honeybees in the backyard. This led to many rewarding hours tending his hives and harvesting honey. When pickleball came to Halifax Garry became part of the pickleball crowd and spent many hours playing a game he soon learned to love. Many people who were members of the pickleball family became special friends. All who knew him loved him.
A sincere thank you to the home palliative care staff for their professional care and compassion, to our Pastor Fr. Irek Bem for his support and pastoral care, to Dr. David Tilley who went far beyond the call of duty to offer care and support to Garry and family, and to the neighbours and friends who provided food and support when we needed it most. A special word of thanks to neighbour, hunting partner and friend, Freeman for his frequent “pop in visits” – always sharing a pleasant story.
