He was married to his loving wife the late Roberta Ann Borden for 51 years who predeceased him in 2007. Born in Halifax he was the only son of the late Fred and Marie Whitman. He is survived by his sons, Bruce and his son Brendan; Craig (Helen) and their children, Jeffrey and Samantha; his sisters, Joan (Arthur) Abbott, Donna and her son Kevin; nieces Wendy and Stephanie as well as many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Bernice.
Ernest was educated at Morris Street School, Halifax Academy and Queen Elizabeth High School. He attended Dalhousie University and the Maritime Business College. He was first employed with the Maritime Telegraph and Telephone Company for five years ending as Chief Clerk in the Sydney Office. He worked for the Nova Scotia Light and Power for twenty seven years and attained the position of Corporate Controller. After retiring from the Power Company he became part-owner of Town Tire Services Ltd.; he sold it and retired permanently with Ann. Ernest was a member of the Society of Management Accountants of Nova Scotia and Canada.
He was among the first to graduate in Nova Scotia and one of the first three Nova Scotians to receive his Fellowship from the Canadian Society. He was a Past President of the Nova Scotia Society and a Past Chairman of the National Education Committee for Canada. Ernest taught Management Accounting at Dalhousie University for the Society for over thirty five years and because of this and his work as a builder of the Society, the E.L. Whitman Gold Medal was instituted and presented each year to the graduate with the highest standing in the graduating class. He was a past president of the Waegwoltic Club, member of St Peters Anglican Church and acted as Church Auditor as well as being Auditor for the Anglican Diocese for some time. He was also a member of the Bishop’s men of the Anglican Church.
Memorial service will be held in St. Peters Anglican Church, Birch Cove, Bedford Highway at Tuesday, February 28 at 10 am. Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial in St. John’s Columbarium. Donations may be made to St. Peters Anglican Church, Birch Cove or to the Canadian Kidney Foundation.
