Merrick, Elizabeth A. (Bette) age 90 of Halifax, passed away on September 3, 2021 in Hospice Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was the only daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Bauer) Merrick. She was the last surviving member of her family.
She was a retired employee of the President’s Office, Dalhousie University. In her youth, she was a congregant of Oxford Street United Church, and following retirement, she became affiliated with her mother’s church, St. Margaret of Scotland (Anglican) Church, where she served on its Altar Guild for several years. Among other activities, she particularly enjoyed gardening, bowling and doing family research. Bette was a direct descendant of John Merrick’s nephew William, and through her research, she was successful in having historical records corrected to recognize John Merrick as the true architect of Nova Scotia’s beautiful Province House in Halifax.
Bette is survived by her son, Harold A Christian of Maple Ridge, BC; grandchildren, Michael, Carrie and Ian Christian, all of Halifax, several nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces in both Canada and the United States. Besides her parents she was predeceased by brothers, William and Ronald; her former husband, Clarence R. Christian of Prospect, NS.
The family would like to express deep gratitude and thanks to Bette’s personal care friends for their compassionate and loving care over the past several years.
Respecting Bette’s wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home. A private graveside committal service will be held at a later date, in Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax.
