It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth (Betty/Liz) Gavin. Betty passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 11, 2022 in Halifax at the age of 84. Born in Corner Brook NL, Betty was the daughter of the late Stephen and Marie Murphy.
Betty was known as being a strong and vibrant woman with a quick wit who was never at a loss for words. As a young woman she moved to Halifax to study nursing. It was there she met Jim, the love of her life and husband of almost 60 years. Betty was devoted to her husband and her children, moving to various towns to support her husband’s career. Along the way she formed wonderful friendships. Betty was a doer and always liked to be “on the go”. Whether it was learning to ski, going Line-dancing, or taking Tai Chi, she was exuberant, smartly dressed and the life of the party. She also loved connecting with friends and family over Tim’s coffee. Betty spent many an hour at the rink watching figure skating or hockey. She was a skilled seamstress, and many skaters remember her creations. More than anything else, Betty valued family. She volunteered in her children’s activities and their friends were always welcome in her home. Her family dinners for special occasions were epic and everyone loved to come, sit and share. Betty adored her three grandchildren and her favourite thing was spending time with them; they knew Grammie was just a call away!
Betty is survived by her children Janice Gavin, Martin Gavin (Jacqueline) and Colin Gavin (Tamie) and her three loving grandchildren Colleen Nicholl (Mallory), Jim Gavin (Rachel) and Annie Gavin as well as her sisters Nora McIntee (Phil, deceased), Anita LeDrew (Gerry), Patricia Murphy, nieces and nephews; and former daughter in law, Joan Muise. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Guy and loving husband, James (Jim) Gavin.
Services will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Saturday December 17th. Visitation from 12:30 -2pm with a Chapel service following immediately. Interment will take place at a later date. A special thank you to Tara at Parkstone Enhanced Care for her time and care of Betty.
