Douglas Merritt MacDonald, 75, of Halifax, passed away in hospital on June 3rd, 2022. He was the son of the late Frank & Katie MacDonald, Glace Bay NS. He is survived by wife Janet (Romkey),daughter Amy (Robert Brohman), son Ryan, grandchildren Emily, Thomas and Hazel and brother Jamie (Bertha Brannen) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother John Robert (Gibby)
A welder/burner he was employed by Irving Shipyard and DND Dockyard. He was known for his work ethic and practical jokes. After retirement, Doug studied Gaelic becoming an active member in the Gaelic community. He toured Scotland, visiting his family birthplace and sampling ‘water of life’. Motorcycles were another passion. He attended bike rallies, toured the Maritimes and parts of the US blasting country music. He designed and welded ornaments for Jan’s garden and created many other pieces. His favourite spot was his garage where he spent many happy hours with family & friends. He was known for his kindness, practical mind and love of rum. A former scout leader he was a unique Akela holding meetings outdoors, teaching his boys survival skills.
Friends, acquaintances and neighbours young and old sought his advice which he offered freely and humorously.
The family expresses their profound gratitude to the staff of 9Lane, Dr. Gubitz, and especially Dr. Ken Rockwood who provided incredible care and support to Doug & family.
Donations can be made in Doug’s name to Souls Harbour. There will be a gathering held on Sunday June 5th at ‘the garage’ 2-6pm.
