Passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer. Douglas was born in Hackensack, NJ. He was predeceased by father, Robert Hamilton, mother, Irene (Boone), and brothers, George and Kenneth. He is survived by wife Carol, children Laura Lindsay (Quintin), Sandra Hamilton (Derek Seaward), grandchildren, Desmond Hamilton and Brian Seaward, two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
Doug attended River Dell Regional High School in Oradell, NJ followed by the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He graduated from U.S.M.M.A. in July 1965 with a BSc in Marine Engineering. After graduation, Doug sailed on American flag tankers and freighters. He worked as an instructor at the M.E.B.A Dist. 2 union school, Port Engineer with Amarada-Hess, and Asset Manager at Tug & Barge Drydocks. Doug obtained a Chief Engineers Licence for Steam and Motors Vessels of any horsepower from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1973. Doug worked in New York, Houston and Halifax as a marine surveyor representing underwriters from 1975 until retirement in 2015. He travelled extensively doing damage surveys on ships in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, Greenland, Central and South America. Doug was an avid Bridge player and obtained the rank of Silver Life Master.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life Reception Gathering will be held on February 27, from 2-4pm, with remarks at 2:30 in J.A. Snows Funeral Home.
