Don passed away peacefully at the age of 84 in Halifax, NS on Saturday, March 2, 2019. He was born September 16, 1934 in Kirkland Lake, ON. Spending his summers in Judique he loved going to dances. He became a Professional Engineer after studying at St.FX and TUNS where he made lifelong friends. After meeting in Cape Breton at a dance, Anita and Don started their life in Halifax. Along the way he received a Master of Science (Planning) from UBC, and went on to become the Director of Policy for NS Dept of Transportation. While raising a family, his passions lay in the church, school, and Scottish culture. Don was a dedicated volunteer at St. Agnes Church for over 30 years. Along with his wife Anita, he started the St Agnes Home & School Association. As a founding member of the Halifax Highland Dancing Association and Amethyst Scottish Dancers of NS, he dedicated much of his life to the promotion of Scottish culture. This stemmed from his passion of history & ancestry. When he retired, Don volunteered at Pier 21, enabling him to combine this passion with his love of storytelling. Some of his family’s best memories are of St FX reunions, sing alongs, Cape Breton vacations, and church activities.
He was blessed with incredible friends and family and held a special place in his heart for children, especially his grandchildren. Don is survived by his loving wife Anita (Rankin) MacDougall, of 53 years; children Dave (Krista) MacDougall, Seana (Todd) Stewart, Robert MacDougall, Marcy (Revi) Lau-a; grandchildren Maggie and Ben MacDougall, Rankin and Kaitlyn Stewart, Casey MacDougall, and Charlotte, Camilo, and Dougall Lau-a; and sister Anne (Barry) St Pierre and their children Barry (Audrey), Mike, John Paul (Rose), and John Mark. He was predeceased by his parents Duncan and Charlotte (MacDonald) MacDougall, aunt Marie Joseph, and niece Laurie St Pierre.
We would like to thank the VON of Halifax, Dr Tilley, the staff of QEII, Camp Hill, and Northwood Halifax. Special thanks to Don and Anita’s relatives who loved and supported him over the years. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to The War Amps or VON of Canada.
