So sorry to hear of Justice Hallett's passing. As a very young lawyer in the 1980's I always knew Justice Hallett would listen to my arguments and be respectful to all lawyers and witnesses in the courtroom. He was one of my favourite judges to appear in front of. Condolences to his family. He will be missed by everyone.

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Justice Hallett.  My condolences to his family.  Justice Hallett was a judge at the Court of Appeal when I clerked there in 1994, and was so kind and  welcoming .  A true gentleman.

I am so sorry to not be able to attend the memorial tonight.. I am committed to a dinner at 530... But just wanted to express that I had the pleasure of dealing with Doane regards your family home, which is now in the hands of a family member.  The home never came to market.  But Doane very kindly sent me money for my time and  that, and the amount,  were a great surprise. He was a gentleman through and through.. and a very kind human... He did live a long and good life, and I will miss seeing him at the Club, where I know he spent many mealtimes in recent times.  My condolences to the family...

My deepest condolences to Helen and the Hallett family. Doane was an interesting, charming man, full of wit and wisdom. He frequently provided me with detailed analyses on various public issues as suggested topics for future newspaper columns - often when one of us was due on the #1 tee box! It was always a pleasure to speak with him; his sense of fairness and his engagement on matters of importance persisted well beyond his formal legal career. I will miss seeing him at Ashburn.

My sincerest condolences to the family of Doane Hallett.  I met Doane in the course of my employment with Halifax Regional Municipality, and valued every conversation I ever had with him.  Sharing common acquaintances, hearing of old Halifax, or talking business.  I still think of his words often.  God Bless.

So sorry to hear of Justice Hallett's passing. I was a law clerk during his final couple of years on the bench when he was  about to fully retire  and he had lots of time to mentor young lawyers.  He was such a patient  teacher as we  honed our research skills.  I ran into him after he retired and would listen to his laments as his church was closing.  Justice tempered with mercy  would sum him up and it was a privilege to have known him.

My sincere condolences on the passing of Doane. I wanted to share a few memories I have of "My Friend the Judge", whom I immortalized in  clay when I was 12 years old. I have so many special memories of our trips to Shediac - playing with Penny the dog, corn boils and delighting in the way Doane would dance along to my Raffi records I would play to entertain myself while the "big kids" were all off together. Being the youngest I was carted along on many happy times Mom and Dad would share with Marj and Doane. There were several cross country ski adventures to the "camp" where we would ski across the lake to arrive at the frozen cabin where we would enjoy a lunch of boiled hotdogs that would take hours to prepare on the wood stove from snow and ice. Doane was always kind, welcoming and took great interest in whatever I was doing at the moment. He was great friend to Dad and our family, and I will always treasure the memories I have of my friend, the Judge.

In the 1970s I had the honour of articling at his firm and under his teaching learned much of what guided me through my career. From the golf course  where he was a devoted member new clients flooded into the firm once they had met Doane. His sore back was the bane of his golf game and it was a shock to enter his office when one found him snoozing on the floor, flat on his back looking for relief. As a judge he was fair and most importantly decisive with clarity of reason. I liked and admired Mr. Justice Doane Hallett and his death calls on us to celebrate his living.

Dear Helen and Family:  We heard about Doanne's passing while on our trip to New Zealand. He was a great "guy" and a help to me when I was editing Dad's story of acquiring the land for New Ashburn. He also helped with their great mutual friend Peter Doig, when my sisters and I were trying to create a scholarship for young Nova Scotia students going to university for golf.

Your Dad was was a unique man, admired by all who knew him. As an Ashburn Trustee, as an advisor to many and as a great family man. He reminded us of our own fathers.

We know you will miss him, but your memories will help you going forward and we both know you will look to his spirit and your Mum's for solace and advice throughout life.

was a wonderful man  and he did some pretty great things for Ashburn over the years which made Ashburn a better place . Even in his later years he used to love playing with the Masters group on Thursday mornings and really enjoyed the comraderie at our Thursday lunches . I personally knew Doane for over forty five years 
as he was a law partner with my uncle Ken and I got to know him through the "Wilson" connection. Doane, you will be missed ,RIP.

Doane had a charm about him which was disarming..I’m sure he took the long view.That was obvious during his long career as a preeminent jurist.He enjoyed the admiration and respect of the Bench and Bar and was a delight to appear before-thoughtful,measured and good humoured.Doane was very much a part of Halifax.Like so many I’ll miss him very much.

I want to offer my sincerest condolences on the passing of your dear Father.  He lived such a productive, long life.    I remember your parents fondly as devoted supporters of their children and was shocked and saddened to read that Cynthia had also passed away.   As one of your biggest fans and one of your teachers  at the former St. Francis School, (73-75) I remember you and your classmates with such fondness and admiration!   Those two years with you all were among the most rewarding of my teaching career.  A genuine credit to your patents, you were all so wonderful and easy to enthuse about learning! To the Hallett  Family— Pat and I want to send our sincerest sympathy on Doan’s passing.We lived in the same condo complex(Summer Gardens) and frequently got together. Interestingly,he was going to join us together with other building neighbours,on the Monday before his death. It’s  HARD To BELEIVE  We WERE  IN SUCH RE GULAR CONTACT AND NOW HE’S GONE.Doane was a good man and a genuine friend  for a long.time! A short message to Justice Hallett's family,

In (I think) 1983, I had the good fortune to clerk for Justice Hallett for a few weeks during one of my terms at Dal law school.  I don't recall whether I actually helped him in any way -- probably not -- but I have vivid recollections of his kindness and generosity, both of which he carried on once I was admitted to the Bar.  I didn't know him outside the four walls of the courthouse, but I admire him very much, and feel a special sense of loss on his passing.  I send you my love and empathy at this sad time.   He was a credit to the legal profession and the judiciary:  a judge with great intelligence, balanced with an open heart.   Sincerely,

To Doane’s family: As a young , still somewhat “wet behind the ears” lawyer, I grew to have great respect for Doane - as a judge, but also as a person. I was  his Secretary in 1972-73, when I had first moved from Montreal.   Leaving only when I had my daughter?   I remember him coming to see me in the
Halifax Infirmary with flowers.
I remember him lying on his office floor to ease his back pain.   I remember him finding a tooth in a chocolate bar one day...a Baby Ruth I think.   I enjoyed working with Mr. Hallett very much.
