It is with great sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Diann Mary (Pottie) Sampson, 73, on April 1, 2022. After battling a long and difficult illness, she passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Maplestone Enhanced Care Nursing Home.
Diann was born December 25, 1948, daughter to the late Sybil Bernice (Elliott) Pottie and the late Joseph Alfred Pottie (Sr) in Halifax, NS.
She was a very loving and caring Wife, Mother, Nana and Sister. Diann was an exceptional wife to Wayne. Their 50 years of love, adventures and lifelong memories were among the many stories she often enjoyed sharing with friends and family and when these were told, boy, she had an infectious laugh - one which will never be forgotten. There was not a thing Diann wouldn’t stop or move for her two children - Khrista and Phil - mountains, and maybe the occasional bus. Her love for her grandchildren - Cooper, Caylum and Joshua - was immeasurable. They truly were the light of her world.
She cared deeply for her family and neighbours. She was always the first to offer help, such a beautiful, selfless and kind woman. Diann regularly helped care for a neighbour who was living alone and needed support and did this without ever any hesitation. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Her illness has taken Diann, but it certainly did not define her.
After working for 20 years as an administrative assistant to the Atlantic Vice-President of The Insurance Bureau of Canada, Diann retired in August 2010. Diann was, then, excited to devote her retirement to her family, most importantly her 3 beautiful grandsons.
Diann lived for Christmas and decorating her tree - like she was a designer. Every ornament was perfectly placed, and with so much love. She was also known for her incredible cooking and the love she poured into each and every meal. Whenever we think of Diann, we will always cherish our good memories together. We feel blessed to have had a woman in our lives who loved us as much as Diann did.
We know Diann would be proud that her family stood by her side in her final days. Our family has suffered an incredible loss, but has gained a beautiful angel to watch over us for eternity.
We would like to sincerely thank all who cared for Diann since entering Maplestone in July 2020 - the management team, CCAs, LPNs, RNs, PTs, kitchen personnel, housekeeping and anyone else who contributed to her care. A special thank you to Dr. Joanna Zed who directed Diann’s care at Maplestone and Dr. Daniel Carver on 9 L, Abbey Lane who diagnosed and initiated treatment for her illness. You all made this very difficult journey bearable with your care and support.
Diann was predeceased by her parents and sisters Shirley Murphy (Gerald); Joan Sawler (Aubrey); Josephine Foster (Edward); Gloria Pottie and one brother, Joseph.
She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne; Son - Phillip (Stacey Campbell) Sampson, Halifax; Daughter - Khrista (Carl Jasmin) Sampson, Montreal; Grandchildren - Joshua George, Cooper and Caylum Sampson; Sisters - Lorraine Holt (Maplestone Enhanced Care) Halifax; Sybil (Allan Evong) Porters Lake; Sister in Law - Norma Pottie, Halifax; and brothers - Ronald, David and Thomas, all of Halifax.
