Sadly announcing the passing of Mr. Derek Stuart Currie on Feb. 18, 2016. Born in Halifax in 1927, Derek was the son of Leo Currie and Evelyn Currie (nee Jenks), both also of Halifax. Derek was predeceased by his brother William Bernard Currie, and by his son, David Anthony Currie. He was also predeceased by daughter-in-law Carol-Anne, mother of Laura. Derek is survived by his sister Cecily Napier, by his wife Yvonne (nee Horne), and by his sons Steven (Brenda), Donald (Lynn), Tom (Stacey), and by his daughter Margaret (Volker), daughters in law Janet ,Grace, Sarah and by 10 nieces and nephews. Derek greatly enjoyed the love of his grandchildren Jacqueline, John, Julie, Brianna, Yvonne, Laura, Allison, Jalal, Beatrice and Julia, and of his great-grandchildren Harrison, Owen, and Rayah.
Derek spent his early childhood in his home on Connaught Avenue, but also enjoyed many carefree summers in Hubbards, on the south shore. At sixteen Derek joined the RCAF where he trained to be a tail gunner. In his early twenties Derek developed a love of sailing, and could often be found at the Armdale Yacht Club and at the Waegwoltic. Two sailboats whose histories are intertwined with Derek’s sailing career can be found today at the Maritime Museum – ‘The Penguin’ (#8 of the original 10 ‘Bluenose Class’ sloops built in Chester in 1945/46), and a wooden snipe that Derek sailed often at his beloved cottage on Lake Mush-a-mush. Throughout his working career, Derek worked for Niagara Finance Company, and upon his retirement, was working for Royal LePage Real Estate. In his retirement years Derek enjoyed many summers at his cottage, and also found much camaraderie at the Red Fox Tavern on Bayers Road.
A service will be held on Monday February 22nd at 1:00 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Old Sackville Rd.
