Cyril 'Cerry Sully Cy' Lawrence Sullivan

Cyril Lawrence Sullivan, died peacefully on December 13, 2010 at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building. Affectionately known as Cerry, he was the youngest of 10 children born to Leonard and Mary (Brackett) Sullivan in Herring Cove on May 25, 1919. He was the last surviving member of his family and was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Ruth Evelyn (Ritchie); son Daniel (Danny) brothers, Roy, Bill, Bernard and Jim. Sisters Eva, Sarah (Sade), Dorothy, Elsie and Angela.

Surviving are second wife, Lenora Evans Sullivan; children, Stephen (Pam Livingstone), Patricia (John) Emmett, and Terry (Tracey). Grandchildren, Jonathan (Danielle Gregoire) Emmett, Almonte, Ontario; Kelly (Jonathan) DeCoste, Calgary, Alberta, Erin Emmett (Paul), Shannon Emmett (Andrew). Joel Sullivan (Heather-Jean), Adrienne Sullivan (Andrew). Richard and Holly Sullivan. Great-granddaughter, Fiona Emmett. Stepchildren, Ann-Marie, John and George.

A Second World War veteran; “Sully” served with the First Special Service Force also known as the Devils’ Brigade from July 1942, until May 1945. After many months of specialized training in Helena, Montana Cerry was deployed to the Aleutian Islands and then onto North Africa, Italy, France and England. Cerry was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, as well as The Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement while serving with the 2nd Canadian Parachute Battalion, First Special Service Force in military operations. He also received many service award medals from Canada.

After the war Cerry worked for the Federal Government as a Customs and Excise Officer until his retirement in 1978.

Cerry was a devout Catholic and for many years attended daily Mass at St. Agnes Church where he was a long time parishioner. Dad loved to spend his summers at the cottage on Lake Major with Ruth, his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his daily swims as well as boating and fishing. The family would like to thank V3 West for the care given to Cyril over the last 4 years. A special thanks to niece, Vicki for her many visits, food and love and especially for making sure Uncle Cerry got to church every Sunday; your kindness was very much appreciated. Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Friday, December 17th, 7 – 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road, Saturday, December 18th at 1:00 pm.
