YOUNG, Cory George Burton – 66, Halifax, passed away suddenly on Monday, May 13, 2024 at home. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Donald Burton and Gracie Barbara (Deleon) Young.
His family and friends both here in Halifax and Montreal (Wright Family) love and will miss him dearly.
Cory was the youngest boy, third youngest overall of nine siblings, growing up on Maynard Street in Halifax. In addition to his siblings, he was also close with his family in Beechville and the other families in the neighborhood in and around Maynard and Creighton Streets.
Cory moved to Quebec by the time he was 18. Cory was a very proud Dad, his son, Brandon looks exactly like him and shares his love of dancing and music as well as being a very stylish dresser.
Cory’s former longtime partner Darlene Wright, and her family have always been a constant support in Cory’s life. In her words, Cory was, “my love, my heart, my partner, the Lord gave me his son and for that I will always have a piece of Cory Young, on my mind, in my heart and soul”. Cory was truly blessed with this beautiful family and their unconditional love in his new home away from home in Quebec.
Cory only returned home to Halifax 5 years ago at the age of 63. The opportunity to reconnect with family and childhood friends in the last 5 years has been such a blessing.
Cory loved music, for him, music was life and he truly lived to play music. He had a little radio that he would have playing constantly at home. Cory sang / played in a couple of bands over the last 5 years here in Halifax, one being Dyversity, which re-connected him with a few childhood friends and family as well as allowing him to make some great new friends with common interests in music. He also had a blues band that he played with as beloved regulars at Bearly’s at their Sunday Night Blues Jam. He held the music community and the connections and friendships he made there close to his heart. He was truly living his dream to play music and entertain people.
Always the charmer, he was known for his big smile and charismatic personality, no matter where he was or the company he was in, he connected with people and made friendships. He loved to shoot hoops with the young folks, he also liked to be active using a collection of bicycles to get around the city in.
Always dressed to the nines as they say, he had his own unique style and was known for being a sharp dresser in his suits and hats. He also loved to barber hair, both men’s and lady’s hair cuts and styles. He’d hook you up, and if you didn’t have the money to pay, he’d say, “No problem, get me next time”.
