Claire was born May 6 1931, to Harold and Mabel (Hanbidge) Applegath in Toronto, Ontario. In her youth she attended Havergal College, where she formed lifelong friends and was a proud "old girl". It was there she developed a passion for sports of all kinds. She was an avid badminton player, swimmer and curler but her love was always golf.
Claire had suffered with dementia and alzheimers for the past few years. We are happy that she found peace and that she was able to pass quietly in her sleep. She was attended by her daughter just as she would have wanted.
Claire was predeceased by our father James Stewart Keith (Stew), her parents Harold and Mabel, brother Gordon Applegath, her inlaws June Applegath, Arthur Keith (Bud), Sylvia and Ann Keith. She was also predeceased by nieces, Jane Applegath and Jennifer Keith. Claire was also preceded in death by her beloved Tryggve Larsen (Trigger) in April of 2021.
After the passing of Stew in 1993, Claire focused on her golf, playing in Nova Scotia Championships, representing the province as a Senior and making a small fortune from anyone who would play her for “ just a dime a stroke”. Claire followed the sun as the leaves would start to fall here at home she would prepare to migrate to warmer climes and 2 rounds a day. It was in Florida where fate sat her next to Trigger at a community potluck and the rest as they say is history. Mom and Trigger shared a love for travel, old movies and each other. Trigger even moved up past golf on Claire’s favourites list. They spent their golden years cruising, seeing the world and caring for each other.
Claire was a proud Mom to Bruce and Heather, attending sporting events in cold rinks and in bad weather, listening to loud music, supporting through heart aches and decisions good, bad or otherwise, refereeing the bickering and ensuring we had everything we needed up to the very end… With the possible exception of home cooked meals.
Mom was heavy on opinions and light on a filter, you either agreed or agreed to disagree. We will miss her as will her many friends and relations.
She is survived by her son Bruce Keith (Suzanne), daughter Heather Keith ( Rob D’Eon), grandson Chase. Nephews, Greg Keith (Lorraine), Wayne Applegath (Ginger) and Stephen Applegath. Nieces Janet Keith and Elaine Catapano (Christine). Step daughters, Toni Muscatello (Tony) and Judy Smith (Greg) and many grandnephews and grandnieces. Claire is in the care of J. A. Snow Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday May 27 at 3:00 pm in First United Baptist Church of Annapolis Royal, 762 St George St, Annapolis Royal, NS.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association of Nova Scotia. We would like to thank the caring staff in the enriched memory care wing at Parkland at the Lakes. They truly made a difference in Claire’s final year.
