It is with deep sadness that the family of Charles Joseph Tanner announces his passing on Oct. 16, 2019.
Born in Montreal he was the son of the late Charles and Constance (Davies) Tanner. Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years Pat, children Gregory (Margret), Sandra (Lloyd) and Jo-Anne, cherished Grampy to Jennifer, Jaclyn, John, Ian, and Joey, and great grandchildren, Carter, Lauralee and Constance.
After Charlie obtained his primary Education, he entered Loyola College enrolling in the ROTP and was assigned to the 401 Fighter Squadron in Westmount. He attended officer training school at the military college in Kingston Ontario and pilot training with NATO in Centralia, Ontario, upon graduation from the Loyola with a BSC. Charlie then enrolled at the Nova Scotia Technical College in Halifax to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 1960. In July of that year he married Patricia (Oncescu) and worked in Ontario and Quebec. In 1967, the Tanner family with 3 kids in tow, returned to Halifax where he joined Markland Associates later establishing Markland Industrial Supplies Ltd. During that period he was an active member of APENS, APEO, and ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers), he served as secretary for many years. Charlie spent many happy years in Jollimore before moving and building their home on the family property in East Dover.
Charlie had a passion for boating, he and Pat were members of the Armdale Yacht Club for over 20 years where they accumulated quite a circle of friends. Later in life, he and Pat had countless enjoyable winters spent RV’ing throughout the Southern USA.
The family would like to give a sincere thank you to Hospice Halifax, the nurses, staff and volunteers for their compassion, care, and comfort given to Charlie and family; Father Owen Connolly, Father Sebastian Szewczyk, Dr. Finley Spicer, Heart function clinic, Heart failure clinic, VON, and Northwood home care.
Liturgy of the word will be celebrated on Thursday, Oct 24, at 1:30 PM at Saint Benedict Church, corner of Dunbrack and Radcliff in Clayton Park. Deacon David Viscount officiating. Interment will take place at St. Thomas Cemetery, East Dover at a later date.
