SHAW, CHARLES BAYNE of Halifax passed away on August 7, 2014 from complications following a stroke. For 62 years, he was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis Winona Townsend, who passed away in 2007. Born in Ottawa on January 19, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles Gordon and Mabel Somerville (Bayne) Shaw.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher & Suzanne (Simms) Shaw of Halifax; his daughter & son-in-law, Jennifer and Ron Friesen of Boston; his five cherished grandchildren, Taylor & Cameron Shaw and Charles, Victoria & Edward Friesen; his sister-in-law Ilse (Frohloff) Shaw; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his dear friend Mary Knox.
Phyllis & Bayne were predeceased by their three year old daughter Penelope Ann in 1957 and infant son Douglas Bayne in 1952. Also predeceased by his twin brother Gordon Shaw; his twin sisters and their husbands, Marguerite (Peggy) & William Dunbar and Elizabeth (Betty) & Ted MacAulay; his brother and sister-in-law William & Evelyn Shaw; and his sister-in-law, Marjorie (Townsend) McCaffrey.
Bayne was educated in Ottawa and attended the Ontario Agricultural College (now the University of Guelph) until he interrupted his studies in 1941 and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon graduation with his Pilot’s Wings, he served overseas in the United Kingdom and north-west Europe. Returning to Ottawa following the war, he married his wonderful, loving wife, Phyllis in 1946. They moved to Halifax in 1949 and Bayne was active for many years in the Halifax Curling Club, the Armdale minor hockey program and the Ashburn Golf Club.
Bayne was a true gentleman and his optimism, thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit enriched the lives of everyone he met. His wit and ability to spin a yarn ensured that no stranger remained that way. He was a mentor and inspiration to many younger friends and family whose lives were touched by his. Bayne’s devotion to his family and friends was remarkable and he exemplified the best qualities of husband, father and friend.
Chris and Jennifer would like to thank the professionals at the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater for the care they provided to Bayne, and the kindness they showed to the family over the past few weeks.
Friends are invited to attend visitation at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax on Sunday, August 17, between 3:00 and 7:00 pm. Private interment at a later date.
Flowers are graciously declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation.
Per ardua ad astra.
