I was shocked to learn of Billy's death.  He was such a good man to me in my time of need.  I'm sorry I cannot attend his funeral to give a final thank you but I am away and send you all my condolences, especially Debbie and Donna.   Sincerely

My wife Sharon and I extend our deepest condolences to the Downey family for this great loss. Billy was a great friend to me personally and I am extremely saddened by his passing. I have great memories of how Billy extended his hand of friendship to me after he had heard me, someone he had never met, being interviewed on CBC Radio and of how he welcomed me and the great Canadian author Austin Clarke to Halifax, how he showed us around Halifax, and how he treated us as family. Austin and I always talk very fondly of our time with Billy in Halifax and to this end Austin sends his condolences as well. Then, Sharon, my son Mensah and I spent two years in Halifax, and again Billy took me deeply into his family and friends, took me to hockey games, introduced Sharon and me to family members, invited us into his home and several times prepared delicious lobster dinners for us, and invited me to spend every Saturday afternoon having lunch/dinner at Jim's with the boys, with Billy, Graham, Mike and Don before he moved back to Toronto. Therefore, I am very, very sad that Billy is no longer physically with us. I am also saddened that Sharon and I are not able to attend Billy's funeral and to express these sentiments face to face with family and friends. But Billy will always be with me in spirit. I will always hear his distinctive laugh. He was a great human being, a loving friend, extremely generous and always welcoming. And he loved his family dearly. We will miss him. May he rest in eternal peace.

Before the passing of my Dad, Mr Downey would visit him several times a week in the hospital bringing him his favourite milkshake. In my younger years when I was down and out on the streets of Halifax; you treated me so well. My friend; may you find Every Blessing in your "New Eternal Life".

As a child of 6-8 years old I would come to the city to visit my aunt Eva and cousin Joanie.  They lived next door to The Arrows Club and was forever sending me next door for pop (or something).  I remember coming in the door and it was so dim and both Mr. Downey's would be there with huge smiles, and before I could leave they'd always have a treat for me. Its been over 40 years but I still remeber them.  God Bless you and your family.

I am so sorry I cannot be there to say good bye to Billy, unfortunately I am out of the country but my heart is with you.  Like so many, I have nothing but fond memories of Billy whether it be from the days when I visited Halifax with my father and mother in my youth, my travel on the train or even the many times I graced the dance floor at the Arrows Club.  In more recent years, sharing the many handshakes and conversations as a fellow season ticket holder at the Moosehead games.  I cannot recall anyone having said a bad word about Billy.  The family can get some comfort in knowing Billy touched the lives of all who came in contact with him, he was a joy to be around.  He was respected in circles and he may not have known everyone but everyone knew him.  Many nights at the hockey game I had to wait in line to exchange greetings and each time, it was worth the wait.  Billy always recognized the "brotherhood" as the soul and blood of Africa fueled both his heart and mind.  Billy, you will be missed.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

my late husband would have liked me to send condolences as he wondered about a few friends he did not see for a while and I would get the spelling of the Downey name mixed up.
My husband Allen Gray would always say he would still need me for his necktie.  The pets ran with a necktie just a few nights prevous.

Cannot get to the funeral and our two children Tracey-Lynn and Doran would always be there when needed by both of us.

Allen died age 73 on January 26,2012.
