It is with great sadness that we share the news that our mother, Barbara Lynn (Carter) Grant, passed away on January 22, 2023, in Halifax. She is remembered by her loving sons and partners, Ian (Melanie) and Robert (Sarah), her adored grandchildren, Oliver & Violet, and her many friends. She is predeceased by her husband Jim, parents Cecil and Rita (Spencer), and her brother, Bob (Barb).
Mom loved nothing more than spending time with her family. She cherished each and every holiday, vacation and birthday. She loved weekends and sleepovers with her grandkids, whether it be shopping, baking, crafting, or going to the Market. Annual summer vacations with the family were the highlight of her year.
Born on Russel Street in the North End of Halifax, she loved her city – the waterfront, the restaurants, and little shops she could poke into. In her childhood years she had a very special relationship with her Aunt Jeanne Stratton. Aunt Jeanne would frequently bring mom down to stay with her in Washington DC for extended periods, and was perhaps the greatest influence on her life. Upper Island Cove, Newfoundland, was another place that she had fond memories of as a child.
Barb went to Nursing school in Halifax, graduating class of ‘66A, and throughout her life kept a strong relationship with her graduating class. She went on to a long career in nursing as an RN, mostly spent on 4A at the VG. She moved on to research and clinical trials for many years. Most famous of the clinical trials she was involved with was Viagra. She always said she was very popular with the men in that study… they couldn’t wait for their weekly visit with Barb (for the meds!).
Barb had many interests over the years: curling, painting, skiing, she loved walks and playing bridge. She was a long-time member of Ashburn Golf Club and loved the friendships that developed as a result. She also loved travel and shopping (a bit too much).
Upon retirement, Mom discovered her love of travel. There were trips to Nepal, Europe, Costa Rica, Washington DC, and Florida.
Barb brought joy and life everywhere she went. Going anywhere in the city with Mom always took twice as long as you’d expect. Part of the reason was popping into shops, but the main reason was that she was a social butterfly and would stop and chat with everyone she encountered. If by chance she didn’t see someone she knew, she would strike up a conversation with a random stranger and find a connection.
Because of her interests and her outgoing personality, Mom had a large circle of friends. To them, we owe a great debt of gratitude for all they have done for her and her family over the past couple of months. It wasn’t easy and we couldn’t have done it without you…. Thank you.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 4th, from 2-4pm at Old Ashburn Golf Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Souls Harbour or any local charity.
