It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sister and aunt, Barbara Cook (Charlton), on May 8, 2024, at the Halifax Infirmary at the age of 66.
Barb was born in Halifax on June 28, 1957, and lived here almost all her life. She attended Oxford School and St. Patrick’s High School.
She was a proud and loving mother to her son, Timothy Cook Jr. (“Timbo”). Timbo was born in August 1984 and sadly passed away from a rare illness in January 1987. Barb devoted herself to caring for Timbo and carried him in her heart for the rest of her life.
Barb worked for Canada Post at the main post office in Halifax for thirty years before retiring in 2019. She enjoyed her many friends at work and elsewhere and kept in touch until her health failed her. She was an ardent hockey fan and especially passionate about her beloved New York Islanders.
Barb was a wonderful and generous aunt and great-aunt. She had fun going to wrestling with her nephew James and enjoyed nothing more than doting on her great-niece Ashley Isabelle. In her difficult final years, Ashley Isabelle become the light of Barb’s life; Barb eagerly anticipated hearing about every new development and achievement of her little angel.
In her last years, Barb endured a devastating series of serious ailments including kidney failure, heart problems and cancer. Her strength of body and will in the face of these afflictions, and the many painful procedures and hospitalizations they required, was both astonishing and moving. We take solace from the fact that her suffering is finally over and that she is at last reunited with her son.
Besides Timothy Jr., Barb was pre-deceased by her parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Charlton. She is survived by her siblings Gary (Clayre), Glenn, Paul and Beverly; her nephew James (Penelope); and her beloved great-niece Ashley Isabelle.
We would like to thank the staff at the Halifax Infirmary units 4.2 and 8.4 for their kind and professional care of Barb in her final days. We would also like to thank the staff of the dialysis clinic at the QEII Dickson Building.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. in Halifax.
