Beloved wife of James Rostron Wright. Daughter of James and Kate Haywood (Stockport, England)
Survived by her three children – Peter, Ian (Leigh Mazany) and Diane (Duncan Elbourne) and four loving grandchildren – Ashley, Kate, Nick and Liam.
Born in Stockport, Cheshire, England, Audrey was a keen field hockey player at the County level and member of the Women’s Institute, where she demonstrated her amazing baking and cooking skills. Audrey was also an avid walker and member of the Youth Hostel Association where she met her life-long companion and husband of 62 years, James Wright. Until she married in 1954, she worked as a skilled tailor and made bespoke outfits.
In 1967, James and Audrey, with three children in tow, embarked on their adventure to the New World and left England for Canada. Over the next 22 years, the adventure continued with stops in Pinawa (Manitoba), Toronto, Cape Breton and Ottawa. In 1989, they started their well-deserved retirement in Halifax.
Audrey was the matriarch of the family. She created a loving home for her family, which grew to include her children’s spouses and, over time, grandchildren. She was a kind, generous, unselfish woman, beloved by all. She was in frequent contact with the family in England, and always remembered her niece and nephews at Christmas and birthdays. She had a quirky sense of humour, but also had decided views on how things should be done.
She enjoyed the arts through pottery-making, painting, and needlework. She was an avid reader and took a keen interest in current affairs.
Audrey and James enjoyed traveling. In addition to going to England twice a year to visit family, Audrey and James also traveled extensively through the United States with their children, camping along the way. They loved hiking in New Hampshire once they had moved to Halifax. In Europe, Audrey particularly enjoyed Vienna.
Our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of wards 8.2 and 8.3 of the Halifax Infirmary for their kind and compassionate care.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, and extended family.
