It is with heavy hearts that the Crewe family announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Anne Crewe on Jan 26, 2022. Anne was a modest, devoted woman who found her biggest joy in loving her family with as much dedication and heart as humanly possible. She was born in Hunt’s Island, NL July 9, 1933 to Evangeline and Thomas Strickland.
Anne’s mother died shortly after her birth and she was raised in a loving environment by her grandmother Susie Strickland, her Aunt Dinah Strickland, and her father, all from Hunt's Island. When Anne was a young girl, the family relocated across the water, with house in tow, to Burgeo, NL. An only child, Anne dreamed of someday raising a larger family.
At the tender age of sixteen, Anne left her Burgeo home and moved to Nova Scotia where she would eventually meet her husband of 37 years, Wilfred Crewe. The two settled in Halifax and raised a family of three daughters and two sons. Mom was a homemaker in the 1960s and 70s, which meant she worked tirelessly 24/7, keeping the homestead running while dad was at work. On any given day, Mom would be multi-tasking a dozen jobs while five rambunctious kids ran and crawled around. Fresh, white sheets and blankets billowing on the clotheslines, dinner on the stove, her famous apple pie baking in the oven while her TV “stories” (soap operas) played in the background. Love was her superpower and her love is still so very present in our lives and always will be.
Anne was a small, sweet, and soft-spoken woman but when it came to supporting and defending her family, she was a lioness. She fought a brave seven year battle with Alzheimer’s; her love and memory of her family never wavered. No disease could match Mom’s relentless love for those closest to her. Her beautiful smile radiated to the end and stays with us forever.
Survived by daughters Sharon Jakeman (Paul), Karen d’Entremont (Louis-Gilles), Kathy Boutilier (Danny); sons Tom Crewe and Donnie Crewe; grandchildren Melissa, Chris, Brian, Jeff, Kyle, Rick, Katelyn, Mitchell, Rebecca; great-grandchildren Sadie and Janey. Anne was predeceased by husband Wilfred; daughter “Dear Little” Kathy; grandson Mathew Crewe, and special partner, Bill Wiseman.
A special thank you to St. Vincent’s Nursing Home 2nd floor and all staff, and The Berkeley, Dartmouth for their tender loving care, for keeping Mom safe and content over the past seven years and especially through the challenges of the pandemic.
A heartfelt thank you to Mom’s roommate and friend Claire Walsh and her family.
A small church service will be held by invitation. Covid protocols for vaccinations and photo ID will be required. Donations may be made to: Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia (902.422.7961), Anglican Church of the Apostles, 6670 Bayers Road, Halifax or a charity of choice.
