Phelan, Anna – It is with sadness that the family of Anna Phelan announce her death on April 10th 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Anna was born in Colindale (Mabou Bheag), Port Hood, Nova Scotia on March 4th 1917. She was the daughter of Angus McPhee and Mary Ann (MacIsaac). Anna had a long and successful teaching career beginning in 1936 when she began teaching at a one room school house in Colindale and later the Baden School in Southwest Mabou, Cape Breton. Apart from her teaching career Anna was a CWL member for over 50 years. A charter member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in St. Benedict’s Parish. She taught Catechetics and was active in the Altar Society. When Duc D’Danville School was opened in Rockingham, Halifax she became the first Principal. She proved herself to be a very dedicated person, well respected by students, parents and fellow teachers. Although not blessed with children, Anna took an active interest in her nieces and nephews. The family is thankful for having spent so many years with her. She was an avid card player who enjoyed Cribbage and Bridge. She was known for her hospitality and generosity. In 1986 she was predeceased by her husband Rupert. Also predeceased by four brothers: Angus Leo in 1918, John and Alex in 1982 and Leo in 2005. Also two sisters, Florence Maloney (Detroit) in 1989 and Sister Margaret, CND in 2001. Anna is survived by her sisters, Sister Catherine (CND) and Theresa Weymouth (Halifax). Throughout Anna’s life, her in-laws, the Phelan families have journeyed with her in many ways through love and support. To them we express deep gratitude on her behalf and ours. We also give a special thanks to Rose and Eileen and their staff at Country Living Estates for the loving care they gave to Anna in her final years. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Wednesday, April 13th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral mass and celebration of Anna’s life Thursday April 14th in Saint Benedict Parish at 10:30 a.m. with Father Bernie O’Neill officiating.
