Born in Ottawa on December 15, 1960. Andrew was the son of the late Hon. William MacEachern and late Alice Morgan MacEachern.
Andrew was a proud graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax. He then went to work at the Victoria General Hospital in the stores department. He was was often referred to as “the Mayor of the VG”. It was difficult to go anywhere in Halifax, Nova Scotia or even anywhere in the world without meeting someone who knew Andrew. He retired, to much fanfare, in 2016 after 35 years of dedicated service.
Andrew was a 50-year participant in Special Olympics in Ottawa and Halifax. He won many medals and awards in both swimming and bowling, but it was in the pool where he excelled. He participated in four national games over his career. He represented Canada at the 1983 International Special Olympics Games in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he won a silver medal in backstroke.
He was a proud 29-year member of the Halifax Trojans Aquatic Club where he has an award named after him. This award is given out each year to a swimmer who exemplifies hard work, dedication and team spirit.
Andrew loved to travel and went on many adventures with his family. This included vacations in Australia, Hawaii, New York City and the Caribbean. One of his favorite places to visit was Judique, Cape Breton where he enjoyed spending time with his large extended family.
Andrew lived a full and happy life. He wasn’t one to sit on the sidelines and he put his whole heart into everything he did. He touched so many lives and will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Andrew is survived by his siblings, Catriona, Donna (late John Legge), Ross (Diane) and Rebecca (Donna K) and his niece, Margaret and nephew, Connor. He also leaves behind a large extended family in Canada, USA and Australia.
Visitation to be held at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax on Saturday June 10, 2023, 2-4pm and 6-8pm.
The family would like to extend their great appreciation to Dr. Ken Rockwood, Dr. Suhail Alamri and Jody Wells RN and the team at the Geriatric Ambulatory Care Clinic for the excellent care they gave Andrew over the many years since his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. We would also like to acknowledge the excellent care Andrew received more recently from Dr. Burton, her team, nurses and staff on 7.2 at the QEII Halifax Infirmary site. They made his final laps in the pool peaceful and pain free.
