Mack, age 77 of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully surrounded by family June 26, 2019, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Andrew MacKinlay Duffus and Helen (Murphy) Duffus. Mack is survived by his wife of 34 years, Julianne (Kaiser), Halifax; children, Andrea Martel, Red Deer; Susan Crossley (Karoush Vorell), Burnaby; Andrew “Drew” Duffus (Jane), Halifax; Ashley Marshall (Morgen), San Luis Obispo, California; and Dean Duffus (Jenna), Red Deer; grandchildren, Jack, Shane, Hannah, Nathan, Ryan, Veronica, Xander, Jayce, Weston, Brooklyn and one on the way; sister Julie Tingley (Ralph), Glen Haven.
Mack grew up in Halifax and graduated from Kings Edgehill in Windsor, NS. He attended Dalhousie University graduating with a commerce degree. Mack worked at the Royal Bank, family insurance business Saunders & Duffus and with the provincial government in the Department of Economic Development. In April 1987, Mack was appointed to set up and manage the Technology Innovation Centre (now known as Innovacorp) to assist businesses in integrating and profiting from new technologies. During his time there, he became the first president of the Canadian Technology Incubator Centres. Mack was heavily involved in organizing the Halifax G7 Summit in 1995, as well as helping to create the Discovery Centre in Halifax. He was a member of SMU Business Development Centre, and was an occasional lecturer at TUNS. After retiring from the government, he worked with Royal LePage Atlantic for two years until fully retiring in 1998.
Mack loved sports and was an avid curler, sailor and skier. He spent many enjoyable hours with friends playing golf and tennis. He enjoyed travelling as well as playing cards with friends and family. In recent years in lieu of travel, Mack and Julianne enjoyed their trailer at Hubbards Campground, spending time together and making more memories with friends. He was a member of the Scottish Rite with a 32nd degree.
Even though Mack lived with a muscle disease disability he persevered with all of his activities to the best of his ability and was able to enjoy his retirement even continuing to play tennis doubles. He always had a smile on his face and joke on his lips despite his crippling muscle disease.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at 11:00 am, followed immediately by a reception and burial later that day at Camp Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
