Cummings, Allan James - Halifax Allan passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 27th while in the compassionate care of the staff at Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home and his niece Shelley. Allan was born in Eight Island Lake, Guysborough County on Nov.3, 1941, the son of the late John Ivan and Dora (Smith) Cummings. At sixteen he left home to attend Mount Allison University. He began working in Toronto where his career in Human Resources Management lead him to Texas, Brussels and finally to London, England where he lived for many years until early retirement. After retiring, he bought a farm in rural Virginia where he kept cattle; rescue dogs and cats, and had several horses, riding being one of Allan’s loves. He truly loved animals and became involved in the Humane Society while living there.
After selling the farm he returned to Nova Scotia, settling in Hubbards. He spent his winters in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, enjoying the wildlife, the beach and friends there.
Allen was the last surviving member of his immediate family , predeceased by his sisters Mary Cummings, , NY; Isabelle Wills (Dr. Roy Wills), Saint John, NB; Wilma Cummings, Halifax, NS; and brothers Russell Cummings,( Hazel), Raymond (Jean), Eight Island Lake, NS and Ivan Albert Cummings, Halifax, NS.( Ruby). He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Dr. Roy Wills. He is survived by his sister-in-law Jean Cummings (Raymond), Eight Island Lake, NS and Ruby Cummings (Albert), Cole Harbour, NS.
Allan spent many Christmases at his sister Isabelle’s home in Saint John, New Brunswick with his nieces and nephew who loved him dearly where he was like an older brother to them; David Wills, Saint John NB; Ann Barteaux,(Allan) Hampton, NB; Susan Wills, Saint John, NB; Mary Cosman (Tony), Grand Bay, NB. Other nieces and nephews, in Nova Scotia who enjoyed time with their special “Uncle Allan” during his summer trips to his childhood home in Eight Island Lake Nova Scotia; Ivan Cummings, Eight Island Lake, NS; Scott Cummings (Joanne), Dartmouth, NS; Shelley Cummings-.Giles(Michael), Waverley, NS, Donna Allison( Tim), Halifax, NS, and Wanda Cummings Arsenault(Ronnie), Halifax, NS Allan is also survived by many great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews as well as his beloved and trusted friend Dr. John MacPherson and Terry Julian, and his good friend and caregiver, Kathleen Finn Vaughan. He is also remembered by good friends in London England who sent cards, photos and fun gifts to Allan during his journey with dementia. We thank all of you for keeping Allan in your thoughts during this long struggle. He also had the continued concern of Robert Coleman from San Francisco.
