On Jan. 16, 2018, Albert, age 94, was called home by his Heavenly Father. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in the care of the exceptional staff of 6 West at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Halifax.
He was the son of the late Elias Richard and Christina (McKinnon) Shaw of Cape Breton and was predeceased by his son, Peter and his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Lillian Rose (Flemming). He is deeply missed by his children, Brian (Jane) of Ohio, Kathleen (Scott) Anderson of Halifax, Lorraine (Gordon) McKelvie of Halifax, Gregory (Dorothy) of California, Mike of Bermuda, Anne Marie (David) McLaughlin of Albany and Steven of Halifax. Albert was blessed with twenty-two grandchildren, Ryan (Rachel), Evan, Mark (Casey), Greg, Mary Anne, Laura (Jason), Thomas, Caitlin, Sean, Kelly, Gabriel, Joseph, Christopher, Katie, Christie (William), Jamie, Samantha, Joshua, Christa, Alexa, Mitchell, Jacob and two great-grandchildren, Jake and Theresa Rose.
Al grew up on the Mira family farm speaking Gaelic, and had fond memories of their close neighbors, the McPhee family. He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and a graduate of St. Francis Xavier and Dalhousie Medical School. He was a steadfast family doctor in rural Cape Breton, and later became a founding member of the Victoria General Hospital Radiology Department, where he is remembered as an esteemed mentor and skilled practitioner. He was a gardener, an animal lover, an avid reader and a world traveler. His orchids were prize-winning, and his raspberries were the delight of those who pilfered them. Possessed of indefatigable curiosity to build and repair, he could be found under an engine, behind a saw blade or on a ladder, well past his eightieth birthday; his drive and intellect live on in his grateful descendants. True to his proud Scottish heritage, he was a model of dignity, poise and polish who met adversity with stoicism and strength. He cherished his family and his faith, and his generosity has reached well beyond this corner of the world. We hold his memory in our hearts.
