Dr. Newton David Scherl died October 20th, 2017 age 86 peacefully surrounded by his devoted family. Beloved husband of Sheila Scherl for 60 years. Born in the Bronx September 21st, 1931 to Dr. Sam Scherl and Jeanette Zinder Scherl. He attended Bronx High School of Science and graduated from Marquette University and medical school in 1955. During his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital, he met Sheila Meisler across the table in the operating room. They were married in 1957. He served in the Air Force in France for 2 years and subsequently did a fellowship in Gastroenterology. He practiced medicine in the Bronx and New Jersey and was an early user of fiberoptic endoscopes. He practiced at Englewood Hospital for 40 years where he served as a President of the medical staff and Chief of Gastroenterology. He was respected by his colleagues and much loved by his patients. A lifelong poet, passionate joke teller and the consummate practical joker, he always found the humor in every situation. He traveled the world and was a passionate Jew and ardent Zionist. Newton is survived by his wife Sheila Scherl; his brother Burton; four loving children: Michael (Stephanie), Sharon (Eric), Zev (Rachel), Saul (Jodi); and adoring grandchildren: Dr. Sophie, Jacob, Zeke, Randi, Isabel, Jen, Hannah, Adinah, Sam, Jonah and many loving nieces and nephews. His legacy and immensely positive spirit will survive in all who knew him.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 10AM at Englewood Hospital in the auditorium followed by burial at Riverside Cemetery 12 Market St Saddle Brook, NJ.
